A Green Life Lesson for My Little One

As I watch my 2-year-old play in our backyard garden, laughing as his messy hands trace a busy ant's path, I feel a deep sense of responsibility. The world he inherits is shaped by my actions today. Contemplating the towering landfills that mar urban landscapes, I discovered composting - a simple yet crucial practice to ensure our household's waste doesn't end up in a landfill.

Understanding Composting

Composting turns biodegradable waste into natural fertilizer, recycling organic materials like vegetable peels, tea bags, and paper into nutrient-rich soil. This process embodies creativity, responsibility, and environmental respect; three qualities that will help us turn trash into treasure.

The Journey

It began with a small, well-aerated bin in our garden. We were shocked at the amount of kitchen waste we generated each month. Dried leaves and kitchen scraps, once discarded, found a new purpose. This lesson in nature's cycle excited my toddler, who eagerly helps toss the compost pile with his little shovel.

How Does Composting Work?

Collect Organic Waste

Use fruit and vegetable peels, scraps, eggshells, leaves, flowers, newspapers, etc.

Create Space

Use a well-aerated bin in a shaded corner to layer green (kitchen scraps) and brown (leaves and paper) waste. Keep it damp and turn it occasionally with a shovel for oxygen.

Feed the Compost

Worms and microorganisms decompose the waste into mulch. Adding earthworms (vermicomposting) can speed up the process.

Harvest

In 4-5 weeks, the compost will be dark brown to black, smell earthy and sweet, and feel moist. Use it to enrich your backyard soil.

For a Deeper Connection

Composting reduces waste and has become a family habit. Harvesting the rich compost is a celebration for our flower patch, and watching this nutrient-dense mixture nourish plant life fosters responsibility and accomplishment.

Composting has also developed a connection with nature for my child, which is quite hard to find in this fast-paced urban environment. Learning about lifecycles and soil health, and witnessing the practical benefits of composting are invaluable lessons.

A Vision

Imagine every household, school, and community centre embracing composting. The waste reduction would significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions, and healthier soils would boost farm productivity, food security, and biodiversity.

In countries like the Netherlands, community composting is a success, creating communal welfare. India, one of the highest waste-producing countries, could greatly reduce landfill waste through composting.

The Way Forward

Educating others about the simplicity and benefits of composting is a mission I’ve undertaken. As a mother and a human being, I aim to leave a better world for our children. Composting is a powerful tool to turn waste into resources, fostering a cycle of growth and renewal for a sustainable future. My dream is for a future without landfills, where my child grows up in a world that values and protects its natural resources.
